The fundamental difference

Monarch Money is a connected-account budgeting app. It plugs into your bank, brokerage, and crypto accounts via Plaid, pulls in every transaction, and lets you categorize and budget. It's the spiritual successor to Mint.

WealthMap is a privacy-first net worth tracker. It never touches your bank โ€” you enter assets manually. In return, your financial data never leaves your phone. It's built for people who want a clear picture of net worth without handing credentials to a third party.

If you want to know where every dollar this month went, Monarch is the right tool. If you want to know am I building wealth fast enough to retire, WealthMap is the right tool.

Privacy: the biggest gap

Monarch uses Plaid to connect to your financial institutions. Plaid stores your bank credentials (or uses OAuth tokens) on its servers. Your transaction data flows through Monarch's servers and Plaid's servers before reaching you.

WealthMap has no server. No Plaid. No accounts to create. Your data lives on your iPhone, and if you turn on iCloud sync, it's end-to-end encrypted by Apple โ€” even Apple can't read it. We can't either.

For people who travel internationally, hold accounts at non-US banks Plaid doesn't support, or simply don't want their net worth on someone else's server, this is the deciding factor.

Unique features WealthMap has

Wealth Age โ€” a behavioral score showing if you're financially younger or older than your real age, based on savings rate, asset growth, and diversification. No other net worth app does this.

FIRE Calculator โ€” knows your exact retirement year at your current pace. The What-If slider lets you drag your monthly savings up or down and watch your FIRE date update in real time.

National Property Index โ€” tracks each property against the official national price index for 40+ countries. Powered by ECB, UK Land Registry, FRED, OECD, and BIS data. No app does this internationally.

On-device AI โ€” concentration risk, drawdown analysis, rebalancing nudges. Computed on your iPhone. No prompts sent to a server.

Unique features Monarch has

Automatic bank sync via Plaid โ€” your transactions appear without manual entry.

Budgeting โ€” categorize spending, set budgets per category, get over-budget alerts.

Joint accounts and partner sharing โ€” couples can use Monarch together with shared visibility.

Web app โ€” Monarch has a desktop interface; WealthMap is iOS-only.

Pricing: pay forever vs pay once

Monarch is subscription-only: $14.99/month or $99.99/year. Over five years that's $599.

WealthMap is โ‚ฌ5.99/month, โ‚ฌ34.99/year, or โ‚ฌ69.99 once for Lifetime (every future update included). Over five years the Lifetime tier saves you โ‚ฌ440+ vs Monarch.

Free trial: both apps offer 7-day free trials. Monarch requires a credit card; WealthMap does not.

When to choose which

Choose Monarch if: you live in the US or Canada, want automatic bank sync, want to budget month-to-month, want to share accounts with a partner, and don't mind a recurring subscription.

Choose WealthMap if: you live outside North America, hold international accounts, own property in any country, want a FIRE calculator and behavioral score, refuse to sync your bank, or want to pay once instead of subscribe.
